Using a Gantt chart in Jira complements agile boards by showing when work is expected to happen, how items relate, and where risks may appear. Gantt charts add temporal clarity to your other visualization tools.

Using Gantt Charts in Your Jira Portfolio

Portfolio by HeroCoders is designed to allow project managers multiple ways to visualize their teams' work. In addition to table, graph, pie chart and tree map view, the Advanced Edition of Portfolio lets provides a Gantt chart, complete with dependencies. Using the same fields that already feed your other portfolio views (start dates, due dates, estimates, etc.) you can create a intuitive timeline to improve planning and realistic expectations at the highest level.

Using Gantt charts in Portfolio provides:
  • Instant timeline visualization - The items in your Portfolio table appears as a chronological bar chart.
  • Dependency clarity - You can add dependencies to the chart to clarify the needed order of operations.
  • Drag-and-drop adjustments
Drag the bars to update dates directly in the timeline.
  • Real-time Jira sync
All changes push back to Jira issues. No duplicate data entry.

How the Gantt Chart Works in Portfolio

To view the Gantt chart:

  1. From the table view of your portfolio, click on the Gantt chart button in the upper right corner.
  2. Enable the Gantt chart toggle.
  3. Enter the number of visible days and date range parameters.

How to Add a Dependency

Of course, a simple timeline can be deceiving. Sometimes one task has to be finished before another can begin. Therefore, Portfolio allows you to add dependencies (End to Start, Start to End, End to End, Start to Start, Soft). To create a dependency:

  1. Enable the Gantt chart view as described above.
  2. Click on the green dot at the end of a task bar.
  3. A dialog box will open. Complete the fields to create the Dependency:
    1. Select the Target Work Item
    2. Select the Dependency Type
    3. Enter any required Lag time

Gantt charts are a great tool for strategic planning, cross-team coordination, release forecasting and risk detection. Portfolio’s Gantt chart is a great tool for sharing an intuitive timeline with leadership, while allowing teams to continue to be agile.
