Some things aren’t meant to last forever. The Clone Epic Template app will be discontinued as of August 4th, 2022.

Why Are We Doing This?

At HeroCoders, our MO is to create useful, free apps as a proof of concept. If a free app becomes highly successful and has potential for further enhancements, we develop a commercial version, while continuing to maintain and offer the free version (hence Issue Checklist Free and Clockwork Automated Time Tracking & Timesheets Free).

Clone Epic Template did prove to fill a business need as reflected by the number of users. Unfortunately, Jira architecture and the way the app was developed made it hard to support. For security reasons, Clone Epic Template was developed to run on the user’s browser. This meant that HeroCoders didn’t have to store any data and that the app worked within Jira’s READ permissions. However, differences between individual users (their permissions, Jira configurations, etc.) caused problems and generated a disproportionate number of support requests.

Fixing this would require a complete rewrite of the application. Given the significant amount of work involved, the possible loss of trust due to a greater level of Jira access that the app would require, and the fact that other apps on the Marketplace do a great job cloning, we decided to retire Clone Epic Template and focus our time on other projects.

What Will Happen If I Try to the App after August 4th?

As of now, no new customers can install Clone Epic Template. If you are already using the app, it will continue working until August 4th, 2022. After that, when you click on the Clone Epic option, nothing will happen (the dialog will not open). You will need to uninstall the app in order to remove the Clone Epic option from the menu.

How Should I Clone Epics?

We recommend that our customers use Deep Clone for Jira for cloning epics. It allows you to clone an epic, including all of the epic’s issues and subtasks. It also offers advanced cloning functionality such as bulk clones, cloning between cloud instances, and automated cloning via a post function.

Deep Clone for Jira is free for up to 10 users and offers a 30 day free trial. The makers of Deep Clone have graciously offered Clone Epic Template customers a 50% discount for the first 12 months.

HeroCoders remains committed to supporting the community by offering free apps, and donating to open code resources such as https://eslint.org. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by retiring Clone Epic Template. In the end, we decided that our time is better spent focusing on apps related to our core specialization.
